Only this year, the souls will not be quieted.
Ambushed and separated by an ancient evil, the sisters’ journey to find each other sends them far from the only home they’ve ever known. Accompanied by a stubborn imperial guard and a dashing condemned thief, the girls cross a once-empty wasteland, now filled with reawakened monsters of legend, as they travel to warn the emperor. But a terrible secret awaits them at court—one that will alter the balance of their world forever.
I’m really conflicted about this one. On the one hand, I really enjoyed the actual story the Armstrong put forth. The world building was done nicely, and I always love a good high fantasy. I loved the idea of twins as the protagonists and dual perspectives between them. I loved the idea of them having the ability to deal with spirits directly, and for them to have powers.
My favourite part of this entire book were the bond-beasts the girls have had since they were born. Moria, as the Keeper has a big cat named Daigo, that I imagined as a leopard. Ashyn, as the Seeker had a hound named Tova, which I imagined as a huge wolf. These animals had so much loyalty and love in them and they had a ton of personality as well! It really made me want one of my own.
