1. What’s your name?
Alyssa Hamilton-Messenger, legally. But I usually just go by Alyssa Hamilton 🙂 Too long otherwise!
2. Where in the world are you blogging from?
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada! Pacific Northwest baby, where it rains for the majority of the year and winter completely skipped us this year!
3. How did you get into blogging in the first place?
I had always loved talking about books, and I had been working in a book store and loved pushing my favourites onto people. My boyfriend suggested I try out blogging a few years ago and I jumped at the chance. I’ve taken a fairly long break this past fall because of school but one of my publishing classes this semester requires the maintenance of a blog (you can read all my posts about the class under the Publishing 101 menu) so I figured it was the perfect time to get back into it!
4. How did you come up with your blog name?
This image from The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce! I collect children’s picture books and this is one of my absolute favourites. This illustration just completely captured how I felt when I was reading and the name came to me right away!
5. What genre do you read and review the most on your blog?
Young Adult! But i’m trying to get more into adult fiction and adult historical fiction but it’s slow going so far.
6. What other types of posts do you do on your blog, apart from reviews?
I hate how uncreative I am when it comes to my posting. I really only post reviews, Top Ten Tuesday and Waiting on Wednesday. Oh and my publishing posts for this semester. I really want to get more into discussion posts and more creative things but I struggle with it so much.
7. Best blogging experience so far?
Meeting so many awesome people to talk to. I haven’t had much chance to meet people in person but Twitter has been amazing. Also, the networking opportunities. Because I want to work in publishing in some capacity, blogging has given me the most amazing chance to talk to professionals!
8. Favorite thing about the blogging community?
Finding like minded people! With all of the negativity and drama lately, i’m finding it nice to talk to the people I know won’t stir the pot and just enjoy talking books like always.
9. Name the 5 books you’re most excited for this 2015!
1. An Ember in The Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
2. Walk On Earth A Stranger by Rae Carson
4. The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater
5. Winter by Marissa Meyer
(this was actually nearly impossible to narrow down so be grateful I actually stuck to 5 :P)
10. What’s an underrated book or series that you think everyone should read?
I have two! The Impossible Knife of Memory (apologies that the review link doesn’t have working pictures yet, but the blogger>wordpress transition is still happening!) by Laurie Halse Anderson really doesn’t get much talk around it but I truly think that it was spectacular in every way. The writing was heart wrenching but so hopeful and beautiful. Hayley and Andy are my favourite father/daughter relationship of all time and their story just rips me apart.
Second, Winger by Andrew Smith. Again, not a lot of people talk about it but it was amazing and funny, heart pleasing and heart wrenching at the same time, sassy and witty, brilliant to be inside a 14 year old’s brain and cringe but love every second of it. Just simply everything. And the cover is SO PERFECT it gives me faith in cover designers forever.
11. Which book boy or girl would be your book BFF?
Young Adult? Lord Hector from The Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy by Rae Carson OMG. Swoony and protective but lets Elisa do her Queenly thing, takes arrows for her and has crowns made for her. I love him.
Adult? JAMIE FRASER FOREVER. I read the entirety of this series in a matter of months early last year and it was the best decision of my life. I am forever changed because of these novels and this world and the life altering relationship between Jamie and Claire.
12. Apart from reading, what are your other hobbies or interests?
I kick box! It’s for exercise mainly but i’ve sparred a few times and it is so fun. I love to hike too, and living in Vancouver, there are so many options to go that you would never run out.
13. Apart from book shopping, what else do you like shopping for?
Clothes 🙂 I try to limit myself though because I pay for University so when I do shop, I want to spend my money on books.
14. At a party, the DJ suddenly changes the song – and it’s your song. What song
would be playing?
Spice Up Your Life by The Spice Girls for ever and ever.
15. Pick out either a book you want turned into a film/TV show, or a film/TV
show you want turned into a book.
Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy as a movie! I would LOVE to see her brilliant world come to life on the big screen.
